In nearly 15 years of doing high school rankings, few weeks have challenged me as much as this one. After working through the results and the cases for the top contenders, I landed on a decision I don’t believe I’ve ever made before: leaving a team at No. 1 immediately after a loss.

Mater Dei suffered its first defeat of the season in league play last week. The Monarchs remain No. 1 in our latest Top 50 High School National Rankings.

That result matters. It made what had been a clear choice at the top considerably more complicated. But the question became whether another team had built a stronger overall case—and after looking at the full picture, I couldn’t make that argument.

Mater Dei won both the Durango Fall Classic and Nike TOC, compiling a résumé that remains arguably the best in the country. The Monarchs beat Sierra Canyon in the DFC final, handed Cornerstone Christian two losses and defeated the Marist team that ended Carroll’s 71-match winning streak. One loss changes the conversation, but those results still carry significant weight.

Sierra Canyon, the previous No. 1, has just one loss. That defeat came against Mater Dei in a championship match, making it difficult to justify reversing their order. Beyond those two, the results become even harder to sort out. ‘Iolani is 0-2 against Sierra Canyon. Orangewood Christian lost to Sierra Canyon and Cornerstone Christian. Prestonwood Christian lost to Orangewood Christian. Allen is having a strong season but carries two losses to unranked teams. Each has results to consider, and none presents a clear solution at the top.

Unbeaten Seton (OH) and Mill Valley (KS) also belong in the discussion. Both deserve credit for winning every match on their schedules. Still, their schedules haven’t provided the same depth of national competition faced by Mater Dei, Sierra Canyon and other contenders tested at events such as DFC, Ann Kang, Nike TOC and the Asics Challenge. An undefeated record is meaningful, but strength of schedule and quality wins have to count, too.

I’m not entirely comfortable keeping a team at No. 1 after a loss. This is an unusual decision in an unusually complicated season. But after weighing the résumés, head-to-head results and available alternatives, Mater Dei still has the strongest case for the top spot this week.
